Chery Malaysia is gearing up for a fresh chapter in its SUV lineup with the upcoming launch of the Chery O5, a facelifted version of the popular Omoda 5. While the nameplate may be new, the essence of the vehicle remains rooted in the brand’s commitment to style, performance, and tech-forward motoring.
From Omoda to O5: A Strategic Rebrand
The O5 marks a subtle but significant shift in Chery’s branding strategy. Dropping the “Omoda” name, the O5 aims to streamline its identity for Malaysian consumers while aligning more closely with global naming conventions. The facelift introduces a sharper, more cohesive design language that echoes the electric Omoda E5, with a reprofiled front bumper, sleeker LED DRLs, and a grille that trades chrome for body-coloured geometric accents.
Mechanical Refinement Meets Driver Engagement
Under the hood, the O5 continues to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque. However, the real upgrade lies in the transmission: a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox replaces the previous CVT, promising quicker shifts and a more engaging drive. The rear suspension also sees a notable improvement, moving from a torsion beam to a multi-link setup, which should translate to better ride comfort and handling dynamics—especially on Malaysian roads.
Tech-Heavy Cabin with Premium Touches
Inside, the O5 doesn’t hold back. A 20.5-inch integrated dual-screen setup dominates the dashboard, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Faux leather seats with ventilation for the front row, a wireless charging pad, and dual-zone climate control add to the comfort, while an eight-speaker Sony audio system and voice assistant round out the tech suite.
Safety First with ADAS Level 2
Safety is a strong suit for the O5. It comes equipped with six airbags, ADAS Level 2 driver assistance, and a 540-degree camera system—a feature that combines surround and underbody views for enhanced situational awareness. These additions position the O5 as a well-rounded contender in the B-SUV segment.
Early Access for Malaysian Fans
Chery Malaysia is inviting interested buyers to be among the first to experience the O5 through early test drives. Registration is now open at Chery Malaysia’s official site, ahead of its full reveal later this month.
Verdict:
The Chery O5 isn’t just a facelift—it’s a recalibration of what the brand stands for in Malaysia. With meaningful mechanical upgrades, a tech-rich cabin, and a refreshed identity, it’s poised to make a strong impression in a competitive SUV market.
